    Pandemonium in West Challow

    Published 14th October 2019

An evening of music by Pandemonium will take place in West Challow village hall on Friday, 8th November, at 7.30pm (doors and bar open at 7pm) - tickets cost £10/adults and £5/children - and our popular raffle will also take place.

Pandemonium is a versatile music group based in Wantage who have been playing together for 27 years, and play a variety of traditional folk instruments, including melodeon, recorder, English concertina, bodhran (Irish hand drum), guitar, bass, violin, Irish banjo and mandolin.  Their repertoire includes toe-tapping folk tunes from all over the British Isles, recitations, and poetry – serious and light-hearted.  They also sing many popular songs, with plenty of opportunity for the audience to join in the choruses.  Pandemonium’s emphasis is always on fun and informality and a great evening of entertainment can be guaranteed.

The village hall committee will be going round the village shortly to sell tickets but in the meantime - please make sure this event is in your diaries - if we miss you and you  would like to purchase tickets, please contact one of the hall committee, shown below.

Press Release - On behalf of FCC Communities Foundation

    Published 9th July 2019

    8 July 2019

    PRESS RELEASE

Funding Approved for Village Hall Refurbishment in West Challow

The residents of West Challow in Oxfordshire are to benefit from renovations to their Village Hall thanks to a £18,331 grant from funding body FCC Communities Foundation.

The money will be used to rewire the hall, fit new heaters, replace windows and doors with double glazed units and to refit the toilets.

Mandy Barclay, West Challow Village Hall Committee Chairman, believes the improvements will make a huge difference to the lives of people living in the area.

She says: “This project will provide a real boost to the people of West Challow. It’s fantastic that FCC Communities Foundation has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our Village Hall taking shape over the next three months.”

FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community projects through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Penny Horne, Grant Manager for FCC Communities Foundation, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the West Challow Village Hall refurbishment project and pleased our funding will make such a difference to so many groups of people in West Challow and the surrounding villages. FCC Communities Foundation is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that benefit local communities and we’re looking forward to this one having a positive impact very soon.”

Mandy says: “We hope the refurbishment of West Challow Village Hall will be complete by the end of October.”

West Challow Village Hall is situated in a rural setting at the edge of the village. The Hall was officially opened at 8pm on 30th June 1951 by Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman who lived in nearby Wantage. The Hall is the centre of our community, being the only public building for social events. The village has no pub, shop or school. As such it has served the needs of the village since the 1950’s.

With essential maintenance work that can now be carried out thanks to the FCC Communities Foundation grant, our Village Hall heritage will be guaranteed for many more years to come.

    Notes to editors:

West Challow Village Hall is a not-for-profit registered charity providing events, including regular bar nights, to enable the villagers, many of whom are elderly, to enjoy social gatherings.

To date funds have been granted for making the roof watertight, repairing the guttering and some essential electrical work to wire in the new defibrillator.

West Challow Village Hall hosts a variety of social events usually on a monthly basis. Recently there has been a Summer Picnic (bring a plate event), an illustrated talk on Country Houses in Oxfordshire, a Macmillan Coffee Morning raising £200, a Quiz Night with Fish & Chips, a Wine Tasting evening and providing lunch for a WW1 Armistice event, as well as a monthly informal Bar Night.

Events are publicised on the village website, www.westchallow.org, and via the village email system.

The Hall is hired for evening classes, recently dog training and currently Tai Chi, once a week in term time. The local church uses the Hall for social events such as the Harvest Lunch and various fund-raising events, and local people hire the Hall, usually for parties. The Hall is also used as the Polling Station for Elections and for West Challow Parish Council meetings.

A message from Jean and Eoin Lees

The moment has arrived!  We received this email today from BT Openreach:

"Further to my email of last week I’m pleased to be able to say that this cabinet is now accepting orders.  Once again I’m extremely sorry for the delays, providing fibre is technically challenging and there can sometimes be setbacks causing a delay with our expected completion dates. The residents of West Challow need  to contact their chosen Service Providers  to place their orders."

The actual broadband speed that can be achieved on your phone line will depend on your location within the village but this can easily be checked by putting in your post code and telephone number into any of the broadband service provider websites.  You will not automatically receive faster broadband until you have signed up for a package with faster broadband speeds appropriate to your needs.

    Enjoy your faster broadband!

    Best wishes

Both the Parish Council and Eoin and Jean Lees have again escalated the matter to MP Ed Vaizey, and Dr Melanie Smans at the Vale of White Horse District Council in the hope for support to expedite the migration.

BT Openreach have advised that residents will know what speeds they can expect to get by their distance from the cabinet (located at OX12 9TF). They can check the speed by visiting this page under the section “What speed can I expect”. A 'Fibre to the Cabinet' (FTTC) solution is being delivered so residents should ignore the information about 'Fibre to the Premise' (FTTP) on the web page.

Paediatric Pads for the Village Hall

    Published 28th September 2018

A message from Parish Council Chairman Colin Barratt

I’m very pleased to inform you that through Councillor Andy Smith’s proposal that the Village should have ‘Paediatric Pads’ for children, the Parish Council has purchased and installed them in the Defibrillator Cabinet outside the Village Hall.
These pads are for children aged 1 to 8 years, and weigh up to 25 kg.

The directions for use are on the pads case and there are many official videos regarding how to use on either YouTube or the British Heart Foundation.
If you have any doubts or questions please let Cllr Andy Smith or myself know.

    Village Hall Update

    Published 9th September 2018

A message from the Village Hall Committee

You will have noticed some changes round the village hall and there will be more to follow in due course.
The mound in front of the hall is in the process of becoming a natural style garden. In this area will be planted the memorial rose to Ethel, as announced earlier this year.
The Village Hall Committee would like to express their gratitude to Bertie Raines of RJR Tree Services, Wantage, for donating his time to assist with clearing the mound.

Having had a Building Survey by a specialised company from Oxford, the hall will be undergoing basic refurbishment. The Parish Council, Village Hall Committee and others have been working hard to establish what is best for us all in the village. A rebuild of the hall was considered inappropriate at this time.
The refurbishment will be an ongoing project as and when funds allow, and the cost for the basic refurbishment will be about £15,000, with scope to spend more. The hall committee is searching out and applying for funds at this time. If any of you know about funding opportunities that we might have missed, please let any of the committee know. The Parish Council have kindly committed £5,000 which is a very good start. Any other donations would be most acceptable too!
We will be asking for working party help in various ways so please keep reading your emails.

Thank you for all your support at village events, as this is our main source of income. If you have any recommendations for future social events, please let one of the committee know.

Macmillan Coffee Morning - 28th September at 10:30am

    Published 9th September 2018

A message from the Village Hall Committee

We will be holding a Macmillan Coffee Morning in the Village Hall on Friday, 28th September, at 1030am, and hope we’ll get a good turnout for this very worthwhile event.
A donation of £5/person to cover coffee and cake is suggested - with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
We hope you’ll be able to attend and support this event - it should be a fun morning, enjoying a Guess the Weight of the Cake competition, and other fun activities.
Please let us know, by contacting one of the Village Hall committee, if you would like to bake or supply cake for this Macmillan coffee morning.
Many thanks - and hope to see you on Friday, 28th September.

    Broadband Update - September 2018

    Published 5th September 2018

An update from Jean and Eoin Lees

As we said to [the Parish Council] on 3 Sept, we would chase BT Openreach with more details on information and timing.
Once again we copied our email to Ed Vaizey who within 17 minutes added his own comments to the group email to BT "Let's hope it's good news!". Later that evening we had a response from BT Openreach who say "we are currently carrying out the testing and commissioning and records alignment which is unfortunately a lengthy process".
No timescales were given but they promised to let us know the progress by Friday 21 September.
So as well as being amazed about how long it takes to do the small number of houses in West Challow, at the pedestrian speed of BT Openreach, it looks like the villagers will be unlikely to have faster broadband until at least the end of September.
If we have not heard by Friday 21 September, then we will write again to BT Openreach and copy to Ed Vaizey.

The Parish Council would like to thank Eoin and Jean for their continued support and tremendous efforts to secure faster broadband for the village.

Due to a clash of events in the surrounding area, unfortunately the West Challow Summer Picnic - which was to have taken place on Saturday, 7th July - has had to be postponed, and will now take place on Saturday, 8th September.
We apologise for any convenience this change of date might cause.
